Steve Browne

Full-Time Faculty
Courses: Audio Engineering I, II, III and IV, and Special Topics

Steve Browne earned a bachelor’s degree in music education from the University of North Texas in 1989. Not quite ready for academia and intrigued with recording, he pursued a career as a freelance engineer, work he had begun before graduation. Within a few years, he put down roots at one of the studios he frequented and became a partner there, helping to grow a small 16-track project studio into a full analog/digital 24 track facility with three recording rooms.

Clients included Bowling For Soup, Tripping Daisy, Pieces of a Dream, Larry Carlton and Brave Combo alum Bubba Hernandez (with whom Mr. Browne garnered a Grammy nomination for Polka Freakout). After 15 years together, Browne and business partner Martin Walters (Spyro Gyra, Ladysmith Black Mambazo and Esperanza Spalding) split up the equipment and moved home. Mr. Browne continues to work from his well-equipped home studio and actively freelances at other recording studios in the area.

Mr. Browne is also a weekend guitar player, playing Sunday mornings at his church and playing some weekends with his band, FM. Other duties within the Commercial Music program include managing and maintaining the on-campus recording studios as well as overseeing the growth and expansion of the recording department.
