Cassi Southerland

Cassi Southerland earned a bachelor’s degree in music from the University of Texas at Arlington and is certified by the Texas State Board of Education as an all-level (pre K-12) music instructor. She is pursuing a Master’s of Business Administration degree in music business from Southern New Hampshire University and Berklee College of Music. She joined Cedar Valley’s Commercial Music staff in 2015 as the Music Lab coordinator and became advisor for the Commercial Music Association in 2016.

Ms. Southerland is a native Texan who grew up in Lancaster. In high school and college, she was involved in several performing groups, including pit orchestra for productions of Oliver! and The King and I, All-Region Band, Texas Wesleyan Honor Band, UTA Wind Ensemble, UTA Concert Band, UTA Flute Ensemble, Arlington Community Orchestra, and the Mountain View Community Band. She is a member of Sigma Alpha Iota, a professional music fraternity for women, and served as her chapter’s vice president of recruiting and president while in college.

After graduating from UTA, she spent 17 years teaching band in Terrell. Responsibilities included teaching high school and middle school band, beginning woodwinds, percussion and flutes, color guard, winter guard, serving as elementary fine arts coordinator and overseeing the budget for two elementary school bands. Other duties included costume and flag design, photography, video presentation, event program creation and the creation of a high school band newsletter.

Ms. Southerland plays as a member of a traditional Japanese taiko (drum) group, Dondoko Taiko. She plays and teaches both drums and the fue (Japanese flute) and handles most of the business side of the group, including booking and payment. Dondoko Taiko has performed all over the state and has been invited to perform in the Hanabi Matsuri (Fireworks Festival) in Nagaoka, Japan.
