Green Jobs Training

Cedar Valley College (CVC) offers "Green Job" training courses and programs periodically throughout each semester and year in the following areas.  They are not offered on a continuous basis and are often provided through grant-specific requests.  Please consult the latest CVC Continuing Education Course Schedule for details on when these courses and programs might be offered or you may contact the Continuing Education Department at 972-860-8210 for additional information.

Green Training Program

Weatherization - 40 Hours
This course will provide the theory, methods, and techniques for installation of weatherization materials and provide the necessary skills for entry level installation under the supervision of a building contractor. This course will focus on demonstration and hands-on application of weather stripping, insulation, ventilation glazing, caulking, hand/power tools, safety, door, and window installation. The course will also include theory and application of more difficult weatherization procedures: installation of prime doors, windows, minor tool repair, plaster and sheet rock repair and more complex insulation procedures.

Retrofitting Tech - 80 Hours
This course will teach theory, methods, and techniques for retrofitting residential and commercial buildings to include programmable A/C control installation, window replacement, insulation, lighting, and landscape. This intermediate course will build on pre-existing skills of the participants or recently developed skills from completion of the weatherization course to perform high-level installation under the supervision of a building contractor.

Commercial Energy Auditing Technician - 160 Hours
This course will provide instruction in theory and concepts behind measurement in energy auditing in commercial building including, fundamentals of building science, basic building energy systems, and measurement and data collection techniques. The participants will learn commercial energy auditing techniques and apply them in lab exercises. This advanced course will prepare individuals with construction experience and have an aptitude in math to perform energy audits under the supervision of an engineer.

Green Business Management (BUSG 1008)
Are you interested in starting a "Green Business"? Are you seeking employment in an emerging "green industry"? Or, do you just want to make sure your organization is on track with sustainable practices? Whatever your motivation, this 6-week course will provide you with the management skills, marketing strategies and legal guidelines to be successful in Green Business Management. Learn how you can apply general business principles to grow your "green" business.

LEED Green Associate Exam Preparation
Join today's hottest industry and become a certified LEED Green Associate. If you are interest in green building principles; just starting your career in green building; or want to expand your basic understanding of LEED, this course is for you! Green Associate is the introductory level of accreditation with the U.S Green Building Council. The LEED Green Associate exam prep course includes a complete review of the LEED rating system, worksheets, simulated exam questions and strategies for passing the exam.

Reducing Your Carbon Footprint
A carbon footprint is a measure of the impact our activities have on the environment. It relates to the amount of greenhouse gases produced in our day-to-day lives through burning fossil fuels for electricity, heating and transportation. There are a number of ways to reduce your carbon footprint and live a more earth-friendly lifestyle. Come learn how you can reduce your environmental impact at work and at home. Bring your utility bills for an exercise using a carbon foot print calculator!
