Frequently Asked Questions

How do I register for a Distance Learning class?
Registering before class begins is the same as registering for an on-campus class.
Once classes begin, late registration is in effect. You must contact the instructor to get permission to register.

Does it cost more to take a Distance Learning class?
For Dallas County residents, tuition for a Distance Learning class is the same as tuition for an on-campus credit class.

Do I have to be online at a certain time or day or can I go at my own pace?
Although online classes do not have a scheduled meeting time, they do have an official start and end date during which time all assignments must be completed Your course will be available starting the first day of each semester, and can be accessed twenty-four hours a day. Most courses have scheduled dates for submitting assignments and taking exams. Some courses have set schedules for assignment due dates and others allow you to go at your own pace. You need to contact the instructor to find out the specifics regarding assignment and testing due dates.

Can I take more than one Distance Learning class at a time?
Yes, you can. However, you must keep in mind that some Distance Learning courses require more time to access assignments, lecture materials, may engage in discussion boards and other learning activities that traditional courses do not require.

How can a Distance Learning class be full - why can't I enroll in it?
In order to provide you with a quality course and individual attention from your instructor, enrollment numbers are limited. If the class is full, you can contact the instructor to request permission to enroll.

How do I take tests, turn in assignments, and get graded?
Each instructor determines the testing and assignment policies for his or her course. Depending on the course you choose, exams may be taken online, at the campus testing center or with an approved proctor. Assignments are submitted using email, the drop box feature of your course or other assessment tools. Your instructor will specify which method to use. Your instructor or instructional associate will grade your assignments and any exams that are not online.

What if I don't have a computer at home?
As long as you have regular access to a computer that meets the minimum standards and has an Internet connection, you can take an online course. If you don't own a computer, you can take the course using a computer on campus, in a public library, or in another location available to you.

If I enroll in a Distance Learning course, will I need to come to campus for orientation?
Check the printed schedule notes for information about orientation. Some courses require an on-campus orientation meeting and some do not. The instructor makes this determination. All Telecourses have a mandatory orientation. In this meeting you will be given instructions about assignments, testing, and viewing broadcasts. You also receive a copy of your syllabus plus any additional material you might need. If you are unable to attend a required campus orientation, you will need to let your instructor know in advance.
