African American Male Initiative
The African American Male Initiative (AAMI) strives to impact at-risk college youth and encourages them not only to complete college, but to excel there.

- Provide mentors (Dream Coaches) for African American male students.
- Promote attendance at presentations by successful African American male role models from the community.
- Encourage African American male students to utilize campus and community resources to improve academic and life skills

- Guest speakers from various careers are invited to encourage male students to persist in achieving their educational goals
- HDEV 2315 Personal and Social Adjustment (special topic: men's issues) is a course created to teach young men how to deal with issues in today's society
- Male students are encouraged to participate in activities on campus in order to foster leadership experiences
- Personal and career counseling services are offered to those who need them, in order to help them make informed decisions about their futures
- Mentors and tutors are provided by the CVC Staff to facilitate communications with the students and to provide a more personal level of guidance
- Gentlemen of Distinction is a special interest club formed to provide a positive outlet and learning opportunities through community involvement

During the summer of 2008, 95% of those enrolled in the African American Male Initiative successfully completed the program. Eighty-seven percent of the participants were enrolled in a college the following fall, 54% of which were retained at Cedar Valley College. The students excelled particularly in math and science at a rate of the 71%. This significantly higher than the average for the state, which is 55%.
