Beginning of the Semester
Course Syllabus
At Cedar Valley College the course syllabus is intended to be the primary document whereby a professor communicates to the student major rules and directions for the course. Each professor must provide a current syllabus to every student in the class. A master syllabus for your course will be available in your division office. It will conform to the outline below:

- INSTRUCTOR: Name and Title; Office; Phone numbers (office, voice mail, email).
NOTE: You must provide the student with a means of communicating with you. See your Division Office for access to CVC email and voice-mail.
- EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS: Text - title, edition, author; supplements, additional supplies if needed; resources - names and locations (computer lab, ERC, etc.).
- EVALUATION: Examinations, quizzes, projects, assignments, papers, book reviews, field trips, types of final examinations, calculation of final grade.
- CLASSROOM POLICIES: Attendance; Make-up examinational procedure (if any); academic honesty, drop date.
- DISCLAIMER: You may want to add this sentence to your syllabus:
"Changes may be made at the discretion of the instructor" (usually in writing)
- COURSE GOALS: Course goals should be directly related to the Common Learning syllabus for the course.
- SCHEDULE OF CLASSES AND/OR LABS: Attach the daily or weekly schedule of classes, topics, reading assignments, and test dates.
- PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES: The detailed competencies (educational outcomes) for your course.
- DISABILLITY STATEMENT: Notifies students with physical or learning disability that Cedar Valley has special services to assist their learning. Student should notify the instructor during the first class of the semester.
Personalizing Your Syllabus:
You will need to provide your individual information on the master course syllabus (your name and how students can contact you, and the schedule of classes and/or labs). If you want to make changes to any other part of the syllabus, such as grading procedures, textbook, or classroom policies, you must check with your division dean before doing so. All instructors teaching a particular course must use the listed course goals and performance objectives or outcomes on the master syllabus.
