History
Cedar Valley began intercollegiate play in 1991, under the direction of Head Coach Jerry Esparza. The 1992 season saw the formation of the Metro Athletic Conference and equally as important, the start of Division III athletics. These two developments gave the baseball program a chance to compete for a national title every year.
Benny Jones took over the program and led the Suns to a second place conference finish in 1992, one game from going to the World Series. Jones' first recruiting class became sophomores in 1993, and the experience paid off with a conference championship and a trip to Jamestown, N.Y., for the Division III World Series. The Suns earned third place in the nation in New York that May and had six players sign with Division I universities.
Russell Stockton took the helm for the 1995 season and make his mark very quickly as well. His first true recruiting class took another conference championship in 1997. That team traveled to Batavia, N.Y., played in the national championship game and ended up with second place in the nation.
Jeff Turner took the reigns for the '98-'99 and '99-'00 seasons, along with Assistant Coach Jack McNellie.
Kyle Koehler served 7 years as the head baseball coach at Cedar Valley College. He helped send approximately 40 baseball players to four year institutions and one to the minor league to continue their baseball career. He improved the baseball program with strong a emphasis on academics and his personal expertise in hitting.
